How to measure battery capacity

A charge status table and a battery meter are used while measuring car battery capacity. Voltage measurement and densitometry are performed in open system batteries. However, in closed system batteries density measurement is not performed, but the voltage measurement can be done. The voltage measurement is performed to understand the current status of the battery charge. While voltage is measured with a precise voltmeter, the density is performed with the help of a hydrometer. Multimeter on the other hand, measure both the voltage and ampere values. Multimeter performs battery measurement with two different input sockets for that purpose. Electrolyte density on the other hand is defined with gr/cm3 and measured with a device called a Baume hydrometer. For example, a 1.280 gr/cm3 density is equal to 31.5 in Baume scale.

What should be the ideal battery measurement?

Battery is fully charged when it shows 12.80V on the charge status table, and if it shows a 1.280 gr/cm3 initial electrolyte density However, any voltage value below 12.4 volts indicates the commencement of sulphation within the battery. This value should be increased to 12.80 volts again with the help of a redresser.&nbsp;

If battery charge measurement is to be performed in amps, the multimeter should be set to amp sign. Measurement cable in red is connected to &quot;A&quot; input for ampere measurement. Probes are connected to the device in series to perform a battery ampere measurement. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Things to be aware of during a battery capacity measurement

Terminal connection points should not be loose or moving and checked before starting the measurements. Make sure there is no deformation such as cracks on the battery&#39;s outer case or cap. Broken battery vents, covered battery caps or stuffed outgas channels can cause risks and accidents. If there is not any issue with the battery, battery capacity measurement can be performed. However, it would be misleading to measure a battery if it has been recently charged. Since it can affect battery voltage measurement, it can create misleading results.
